From Intern to Innovator: What the Snappiterns Innovation Lab Taught Me

By Athina Rapti, Corporate Communications & Community Intern

When people think of an internship, they often imagine learning by observing.

The Snappinterns Innovation Lab challenged us to do something different: learn by building.

For one day, interns from across the business stepped outside their day-to-day responsibilities and came together with one challenge: imagine the future of banking and transform an idea into a solution.

There were no predefined answers or perfect roadmaps. Instead, we were encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions and collaborate with people from completely different backgrounds.

Different backgrounds with one shared objective.

One of the biggest takeaways from the Lab was experiencing what cross-functional collaboration really looks like.

Each team brought together different perspectives from Communications and Marketing to Product, Technology, Customer Experience and Operations. Everyone approached the challenge differently, and that’s exactly what made the discussions so valuable.

Ideas evolved because someone looked at the problem from another angle. Assumptions were challenged. Concepts became stronger through conversation.

As one of my fellow interns G.Adrianopoulos, put it:

“What stood out to me the most was collaborating with interns from different teams. It helped us get to know each other better, hear different ideas and learn how to present our own in a more engaging way.”

I couldn’t agree more. Beyond developing an idea, the Lab gave us the opportunity to develop something equally important: our ability to communicate, collaborate and inspire confidence in our ideas.

Learning to Think Like Founders

Coming from Corporate Communications, I’m used to thinking about how stories are communicated.

The Lab shifted my perspective.

Before communicating an idea, you first need to understand whether it creates value. Every conversation started with questions like: Who are we solving this for? What problem are we trying to solve? Would someone genuinely use this?

It reminded me that innovation doesn’t start with technology, but with curiosity.

More Than a Pitch

Of course, presenting our concepts to Snappi’s leadership team was one of the highlights of the day. What made the experience truly memorable, however, wasn’t just the final presentation. It was the atmosphere that shaped the entire Lab. Despite the competitive element, the environment remained open, collaborative and genuinely supportive, encouraging every team to experiment, challenge ideas and bring out their best.

As one of the interns, S.Michas, reflected,

“What I appreciated most during the Lab was the balance between the relaxed atmosphere and the competitive nature of the challenge. It created an environment where we genuinely enjoyed working together, while also motivating us to present an idea that would stand out. It was definitely one of the highlights of my internship.”

But looking back, the presentation wasn’t what made the experience memorable, but the process behind it.

The brainstorming sessions, the moments when one question completely changed the direction of an idea, the constructive feedback within the team.

And the realization that some of the strongest ideas emerge when people with different expertise work towards the same goal.

A Culture That Encourages Ideas

One thing became clear throughout the day: innovation is part of the culture , not limited to a specific department.

A culture where curiosity is encouraged, different perspectives are valued and interns are trusted to contribute ideas with real business potential.

As interns, we joined Snappi to learn from experienced professionals and the Lab gave us something equally valuable: the opportunity to contribute, collaborate and experience first-hand what innovation looks like in practice.

Because sometimes, the best way to learn isn’t by watching.

It’s by creating together.
